Department of English Language

The philosophy of Mountain Top University (MTU) English Language programme is to produce graduates who are academically, professionally, proactively and productively empowered to competently discharge their duties to the society. They are also morally and spiritually equipped to excel in their families and the society at large through their communicative competence. Our philosophy also includes producing English Language graduates who are fluent in utilizing English Language appropriately in order to achieve tranquility and productivity in our society. We also aspire to produce graduates who would be employers of labour through language use and not necessarily employees.

The objectives of the B.A. degree programme in English are:

  1. to train students to acquire adequate communicative competence in both spoken and written varieties of the English language;
  2. to equip the students with adequate linguistic knowledge of the English language (including its varieties) through a detailed study of its sound system, its lexicon, its syntax, semantics and usage;
  3. to train students to develop a critical appreciation of the norms of literature through the study of its various genres;
  4. to provide a wide range of literary experience with the acquisition of an in-depth literary culture in Literature in English and an exposure to the norms of critical idioms applicable not only to English literature but also in varying degrees to other literatures; and
  5. to promote the acquisition of expertise in English studies and to encourage the development of literary creativity in the different genres of literature.
  6. To instill the virtues of hard-work, discipline and respect for the law of our land
  7. To produce English Language graduates who are globally relevant through the use of innovations in Information and Communication Technology [ICT] and who would creatively produce communication materials through sound research techniques to meet societal needs.
  8. To produce English Language graduates who will be partners in the search for solutions to the myriads of problems confronting society.
  9. To produce God fearing English Language graduates who will be role models and are dedicated to improving and making the society a better place.

The entry requirements shall be at least credit level passes in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics to form the core subjects with credit in any other two relevant science subjects, at the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent. In addition, an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with relevant subject combination is required for Admission into 100 Level.
