Department of Chemical Sciences

Chemistry is the study of the structure, properties and functions of matter. Chemists study and design materials and products by exploring the principles that govern changes which occur in matter and devising methods by which those changes can be exploited to create entirely new materials and products. Consequently, a sound knowledge of chemistry is fundamental to a holistic understanding and application of other subjects including biology, geology, physics, meteorology, astronomy and engineering. The BSc in Chemistry programme empowers its graduates with fundamental knowledge of the science that created today’s essential materials including penicillin, gasoline, plastics, fertilisers and nuclear energy in addition to the science that will solve on-going challenges, such as the need for sustainable energy sources and cleaner fuels, better climate and environmental health, and supermaterials.
